Canines With a Cause harnesses the untapped potential of shelter dogs to heal emotional and psychological wounds, provide unconditional love, support and companionship for Veterans, and give a new leash on life to those in need through assistance, therapy or service dog work. Making a difference, one person and one dog at a time!
Canines With A Cause (CWAC) was created with the intent to save healthy, adoptable dogs from local shelters and place them with disabled veterans as loving companions and assistance dogs. With our program at the Utah State Prison, we are now able to begin basic training to better place dogs and continue the training with the veteran in need.
At any given time Canines With a Cause has approx 70 veterans actively training and over 100 on the waiting list. CWAC does not provide fully trained service dogs; our program depends upon the veteran’s attendance in weekly classes, where we train the veteran to train their dog. We do not generally place dogs that we consider to be service dog candidates with anyone who is not enrolled in our training program, which means being within a reasonable commuting distance to Salt Lake City.
