Alabama Vocational Rehabilitation Service (VRS), the largest division within the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, helps Alabamians with disabilities achieve independence through employment.

VRS provides specialized employment- and education-related services and training to assist teens and adults with disabilities in becoming employed. In addition, VRS partners and collaborates with the State Department of Education, local school systems, technical schools, community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities to develop statewide school-to-work, postsecondary, and adult life programs to help students with disabilities succeed in secondary and postsecondary education and transition to employment.

The types of services available through VRS are as varied as the people it serves and are designed specifically to meet the needs of each individual. Available through any of the 20 VRS offices statewide, services can include educational services; vocational assessment, evaluation and counseling; job training; assistive technology; orientation and mobility training; and job placement.

To be eligible for services, individuals must have a physical or mental impairment which results in a substantial barrier to employment, and there must be a reasonable expectation that he or she can benefit from rehabilitation services in terms of becoming employed.
